Next to the mansion are a series of residential, teaching, recreational and ancillary buildings which support the activities of a college. The Home Office commissioned Haverstock to design new residential accommodation following a site masterplanning exercise. The brief called for 120 study bedrooms with communal facilities, on a site close to the centre of the campus. We proposed simple building forms, which established a strong horizontal emphasis broken into four identical two-storey elements linked into pairs by secondary single-storey buildings.
The four blocks are constructed with traditional pitched roofs with plain clay tiles to complement existing surroundings. A variety of elements were used from glass privacy screens, timber and steel veranda decks, timber and steel pergola trellises and solar screens together with handrails and steel staircases. The site has outstanding views and total privacy to the south and west. They also have a deck with large sliding glazed doors so that the quality of the outside space can be fully enjoyed.
