It is the only school of its specific type in the Borough catering for students with the most severe Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Conditions. The key concept is ‘the sensory school’ – a building that offers a sensory experience throughout, rather than only in dedicated locations. The whole school has sensory features from the building form and materials through to sophisticated integrated ICT facilities. These offer tools for learning, way finding and developing life skills. The building plan is simple and legible. External cladding materials are carried into the internal environment to create distinct identities for each zone of the building and assist with orientation. The variety of building forms and materials creates a lively, contemporary street frontage which celebrates the important place that a new special school will have in the community.
