The building and grounds form one half of a city block with the remainder housing Brighton Law Courts. Brighton Police Station is the principal police station in Brighton and houses a mixture of public Police facilities and secure Police facilities. There is also a significant amount of car parking on site, primarily Blue Light response vehicles, and a district Police vehicle refuelling station.
The scheme we proposed looked to demolish all of the police operational buildings on the site and erect a new part 8-storey building on the northern aspect to include a police front desk and police neighbourhood base with office accommodation above. Parking was innovatively engineered into the basement levels. Two new residential blocks were also proposed and arranged either side of a central communal garden area. The residential accommodation extended to a maximum of 6/7-storeys, stepping down to 4/5-storeys and contained 82 flats (specifically 18 1-bed units, 40 2-bed units and 24 3-bed units). The overall scheme also included 398m2 of retail accommodation at street level.
